"Supposing is good, but [researching] is better"
- Mark Twain

By focusing on university students' needs, I analyzed activity-focused apps such as Bunch and Houseparty, uncovering key insights: a desire for social interaction, preference for activity-oriented apps over traditional chat functions, and challenges in scheduling group hangouts.

To address these insights, I prioritized business, user, and technical goals. Starting broad, I listed all potential features and determined their importance in fostering meaningful interactions and seamless user experiences. The challenge lay in integrating these features into a mobile interface while maintaining a focus on video calling experiences and user-friendly scheduling solutions.

Insights from activity-focused apps guided our prioritization of user-centric features, creating a platform that fosters engaging experiences and genuine social connections. This approach informed our decisions on prioritizing elements to meet user expectations.

Embracing iteration for user-centric design

Beginning with rough GUI designs in 2017, our journey to transform Let's Hang involved a commitment to iteration, leveraging personal challenges for unique design perspectives, and learning from successful user experiences. We embraced prototyping, allowing us to explore diverse ideas and refine our vision for a seamless and engaging app.

Drawing inspiration from Skype's activity-based onboarding process and incorporating a friendly helper, we improved user learnability and created a more memorable experience. This iterative process and integrating valuable user insights ultimately redefined digital hangouts for university students.

Final design

Through engaging activities and seamless user experience, Let's Hang has made staying connected not only effortless but also truly enjoyable.

Through the use of social media, the user can easily sign up and connect with friends from the get-go. Allowing them to build friendships and have a base behind them.

Gamifying onboarding

For the onboarding process, we designed a Skype-like experience where using a fake activity allows new users to make sure settings are working before the real deal; ensuring learnability.

It's a free practice before the main race. This was a great opportunity to bringing in a friendly face that the user can connect to. This helper pops up along the way, guiding the user's experience.

Hangtime creation

When creating a hangtime, everyone's schedules must be accounted for to ensure that everyone can hang out. Our goal was to create an intuitive layout that enables the user to create hangtimes in no time!
